Seeing through the eyes of others

poetry and writings based on the truth of life. Everyone sees through their own lenses. Trade glasses with someone else and view your world…and theirs. I write personal, I write upon request and not limited to one area, genre, or style

swerve to miss it

They said it was recovery, a room full of folding chairs and coffee steam rising, stories spilling like confession without a cross. They said it was healing, 12 steps, 8 principles, 52 weeks on repeat, a cycle dressed like progress that keeps you circling the same drain.

Celebrate Recovery calls itself Christ centered, but listen closely and it sounds familiar because it borrowed its spine bones from Alcoholics Anonymous, repackaged and rebranded, “higher power” language swapped out for “Jesus,” while the structure and heartbeat remain the same.
You admit you’re powerless, you inventory your pain, you confess to the group, you make amends, you keep coming back again and again and again, always recovering but never arriving.

AA never claimed Christ; it told you to find a god, any god, as long as it works for you, a god of your own understanding, a custom built salvation, a mirror dressed up as divine. But truth does not bend like that, and Jesus does not share His throne with imagination. Neither did Christ teach steps, works, self or to forgive His Father. WHAT??
Celebrate Recovery steps in and says it will take that system and sprinkle Scripture on top, uses verses without context, several different Bible translations, principles without the full gospel, a program that quietly promises if you do these things, you will get better.
That is not grace; that is a formula.

It becomes self help in Sunday clothing, self examination, self regulation, self-motivation self, self, self, all while claiming to fix the self.
But the gospel never said to fix yourself; it said deny yourself.
It never said work the steps until you are whole; it said it is finished.
Alas, the subtle shifts that reveal everything: “forgive God.” on page 192 of the leaders guide.,,,,,, WHAT?? WHAT??.
As if He is the one who failed
As if He needs your pardon
AS  if the Thrice Holy God stands accused before His creation.
That is not just a poor choice of words; it is upside down theology.

When God feels distant, when life breaks you open, when suffering does not make sense, the answer is not to judge Him but to trust Him. Yet these systems, both AA and CR, train you to look inward first, to measure truth by feeling, to process pain without fully submitting it to the authority of God’s Word.

Yes, people say it helps. It might stop behavior, it might build community, it might give you language for your wounds, but stopping a habit is not the same as transforming a heart, and sitting in a circle is not the same as being discipled.

Discipleship does not keep you in a recovery room forever; it calls you out into the light, into identity, into new life:

NOT “I am broken,” but “I was dead, and now I live,” not “I am in recovery,” but “I am in Christ.” And that changes everything, because the gospel does not manage sin, it kills it.

It does not cycle you through steps; it gives you a Savior, not a higher power of your choosing, but the Risen King who chose you.
So if the system keeps you looking at yourself, defining yourself by your struggle, depending on a process instead of a person, then it is not freedom; it is just a better decorated cage.

Jesus did not come to improve your cage. He came to break it open.
