I think stepping forward frightens people because it means leaving behind the things they know, even when those things have already finished their work in their lives
Familiar things have a way of holding on to us all. Sometimes people live on old memories as though they are enough to carry them through the cold, as if they can pull them close when the wind rolls hard across the prairie and somehow stay warm
Yet none of us has been asked to make a home in what has already passed. Memories can comfort us, but they were never meant to become our shelter. What warmed or fed you once may have served its purpose; that does not mean you must remain there forever
I have walked down roads I knew would end against a cliff, not because I believed they would lead me anywhere, but because turning around seemed harder than pressing on. I have sat looking at a candle flame, grateful for that small circle of warmth and light. I have kept a lamp burning through the night, hoping it might uncover something certain before daylight found me
Jesus has watched you search the darkness for proof that morning would come. Yet even in the night, He was with you. The candle was not meant to reveal the entire horizon; it was meant to show you that darkness had not overcome the light
I have said “maybe” when my heart was crying out for a yes. I have said “perhaps” when I knew it was time to reach. We have all watched dreams grow thin and quiet, then drift away, because we were too afraid to open our hands, hearts, and souls to claim what God had placed before us
Yet Jesus says: “I have heard every quiet yes beneath your hesitation. I have seen the dreams you thought you lost. Fear may have closed in, but it has not erased what I placed within you. You do not have to be fearless to receive what is before you. You only have to let Me help you open yourself to receive.”
So when I close my eyes and fold my hands, I try to pray like I believe it. I try to trust the faith God planted deep within me,the kind that stays when certainty does not. The kind that does not show me the whole road, but gives me enough light for the next step
Jesus says again: “I will give you that light. Not always for the whole road, not always for every turn ahead, but enough for this moment. Enough to rise. Enough to release what has ended. Enough to take the next step.”
Maybe that is all faith has ever asked of me: not to see the whole way home, but to take the step in front of me, trusting God will meet me there
And Jesus speaks to the heart and says: “Maybe that is all I have ever asked of you: not to carry tomorrow before it arrives, but to trust that when your foot meets the ground, I will already be there.”
