I came from Oklahoma: not a caricature of dust and drawl, not a name stitched to a stereotype, but a person shaped by open skies, by long roads, by the quiet dignity of knowing who I am
I speak with the education life required of me, with words gathered carefully, because some feelings deserve more than hurried language
And then there you were
The journey had left me weary, the airport behind me, the miles folding into one another, my thoughts reaching for a shower, a coffee, a little rest
But you stood waiting by the gate and opened it to me; You held it there as though love itself had made room for my return
You did not need to say a word
Your eyes met mine, and in that stillness I heard everything:
Welcome home
I love you
I am here
You are safe with me
Let me care for what the world has worn down
Let me soothe what has been hurt
Let me be beside you for as long as you need, for as long as love allows, forever and forever
There is so much hurt in this world, so much silence where tenderness could have been spoken
So many people carry love like a letter never sent, waiting for the perfect moment while the moment quietly passes
But love is not diminished when it is offered freely
It is not weakness to say I love you or to let your eyes say it first
It is a good thing to make room for gentleness, a good thing to stand waiting, a good thing to look at someone and let them know:
You matter
You are cherished
You do not have to face everything alone
And what a sight it was, your beauty in the half light, the red of the car glowing between us, your hand upon the gate, your silence opening wider than any doorway
I came home exhausted, I arrived restored
Not because the road had ended, but because you were there to welcome me into love.
